Moonlit Missive #98: 'The Wondrous Stubborn Lyre'

by In Gowan Ring

Moonlit Missives exclusive
1.
Out past the forest in a clearing Beside an ever flowing stream Stands a proud white willow tree With leaves that catch the moonlight With roots coiling round a silver dragon beneath There a hermit long suffered to style Of the branch a wondrous stubborn lyre That would pleasing sound but for one All in vain the tried attempts to tame The strings brought naught but harsh disdain The lyre would pleasing sound for none Until at last came a shy one, a mild one With smooth unringed hands With vest of simple cloth and single band Softly brushing through the tangled chords He stroked the harp as one might soothe a willful horse He sang of nature and of seasons spake Of high mountains, of flowing waters; Thus he drew the memory of the tree awake Sweet breath of Spring among his branches Budding flowers, voices of Summertime Pattering rain and Autumn’s withered mien To the chill of Winter’s chime Then with a key change now he sings of love The forest sways, the poet lost in thought The river’s daughter bright and fair Passing clouds, trailing shadows black as despair Now again the mode is changing He sings of war; trampling steeds, clashing steel The silver dragon rides lightning through the field Heretofore none could play a pleasing sound Wherefore this mastery of a harp so rough and proud? A harp that pleasing sounds for none Many, they have faltered With failing fingers they sang but of themselves While I let the lyre to change the theme It was often that I knew not whether He was I or I was he Out past the forest in a clearing Beside an every flowing stream Stands a proud white willow tree
